Acting out of a strong sense of commitment to the local community, Nesma Holding is involved in many social projects and initiatives across its areas of operation. This commitment is based on a broad definition of the word “community” to include any place where our presence as a company is felt, whether through a business, or in areas where our employees and customers live. Our community activities also reinforce the vision and mission statements of Nesma Holding, referred to earlier, which emphasize our dedication to being respected as a company and to benefiting society.
The company’s community activities focus predominantly on overcoming what Nesma has termed “a poverty of capabilities.” There are many forms of poverty in the world, but the most critical one in Saudi Arabia is the inability of young women and men to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities that are available to them, due to a lack of relevant skills and know-how. Accordingly, our largest community programs tackle job creation, upskilling and training, and supporting unique vocations and professions. Since human talent is critical to the growth of the private sector, Nesma Holding has been able to make an impact in this area relying on our experience attracting, hiring, and training local youth for our businesses. The focus in our community activities is to share our acquired knowledge and resources publicly, so that everyone can benefit.
NESMA EMBROIDERY
The Nesma Embroidery and Tailoring Center (Nesma Embroidery) was established in 2009 as a nonprofit operation providing job opportunities for 40 women with speech-and-hearing disabilities. Since then, Nesma Embroidery’s scope has expanded to encompass women in villages, where female job opportunities are often scarce. The center’s mission is to create a national industry that employs women in sewing and embroidery, enabling them to secure productive, sustainable employment and deliver quality products that satisfy local demand. Nesma Embroidery continues to be a disabilityfriendly workspace and is growing progressively with between 30 to 60 employees in each of its branches.
Nesma Training Center (NTC) was established in 2008 in Jeddah as a center for employability and lifelong learning. Open to women and men free of charge, the center supports young professionals and job seekers in acquiring relevant skills and gain access to networks and resources that enable them to imagine the possibilities for themselves and their communities, and to take charge of their careers. It primarily offers workshops and long-term programs in various soft skills, English language learning, basic workplace training, and career guidance. It also opens its doors to charity organizations and youth groups who host their community activities in our facilities. Since its inception until 2015, the NTC has supported over 1000 people in the Jeddah area.
Nesma Art Gallery was established in 2014 to promote local artists and to assist them in succeeding financially in their chosen vocation and in gaining recognition for their creative work.
The spacious gallery features multiple areas for showcasing various artists, who are invited to exhibit their works without fees. Nesma Art also hosts workshops for professional artists and aspiring ones, and is itself managed by a Saudi artist.
Once a mainstay of the Saudi economy and an integral part of the Arabian Peninsula’s heritage, commercial fishing has since seen a decline. For this reason, Nesma has worked with local fishermen in the Makkah Region to revive the fishing industry in underdeveloped coastal towns. In collaboration with the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Ministry of Social Affairs, Nesma has supported the creation of the Fishermen’s Cooperative Society. It has also sponsored knowledge transfer and awareness programs for the fishermen. Among other activities, Nesma purchased new fishing boats for the fishermen and provided the cooperative with a loan to establish an ice factory vital for its success as an industry.
The community programs highlighted in this handbook are just illustrations of Nesma’s involvement in the community. The company is also involved in other activities to support youth, promote education, and increase the quality of life in communities. Our website, monthly newsletters, and social media platforms have more information about these activities, which include: sponsorship of the annual Jeddah Marathon, building the district mayor’s quarters in Al-Rawdah (Jeddah), supporting the annual group marriage event, and building several parks for the community.
