ABSENCES
Timely and regular attendance is an expectation of performance for all Nesma employees. In the event an employee is unable to meet this expectation because of illness or other unavoidable causes, they must obtain approval from their line manager as far in advance as possible. Approval includes requests to use sick and vacation days, as well as late arrival to or early departure from work. The employee must contact their immediate line manager prior to the start of each scheduled workday that they are absent. When reporting an absence, the employee should indicate the nature of the problem causing the absence and the expected return-to-work date. Employees may be required to bring a doctor’s statement from an approved medical facility for any illness-related absence.
OVERTIME
The overtime policy is different from company to company and may also differ from position to position without violating the labor regulations. In all cases, remember that before overtime is worked, the employee must have written approval from their line manager that they are eligible for overtime.
TIME RECORDS
Employees are required to sign in at the commencement of the shift or workday and sign out at the conclusion of the shift or workday using the company’s timekeeping system. Employees are required to accurately record their time and attendance through the timekeeping system. Alteration, falsification or tampering with the time and attendance records will result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. If you accidentally fail to sign in or out, you must notify your line manager as soon as possible, so that your records are adjusted accordingly.
PAYMENT OF SALARIES
It is mandatory, under the Saudi Labor Law’s Wages Protection System (WPS), that Saudi companies pay their employees’ salaries through bank transfers only. This law prohibits salary payment by cheque or cash. All employees are required to open a bank account and provide the account IBAN details to Human Resources. HR will also inform you of the requirements to open a bank account and may assist you with the process as needed.
THE PROBATIONARY PERIOD
The probationary period provides an opportunity for you and the organization to assess the working relationship before making a final commitment. During this period, which is set by the country’s labor law, the line manager will help you to become familiar with your duties and responsibilities. Important areas are: your attitude toward the work, your efficiency, your ability to learn and perform work duties, quality of your work, willingness to accept responsibility and your sense of community and commitment to Nesma values. During the probationary period, either the company manager or the employee may terminate the employment contract without prior notice. Should this happen, the company will pay no severance benefits. Otherwise, upon satisfactory completion of the probation period, the new employee will be automatically confirmed in their position.
WORKING HOURS
The company establishes work schedules that take into account operational needs, the type of work assignments to be performed, legal requirements, and the need to enhance productivity. Ask the company about your daily and weekly working hours, including start and end times as well as the break time. Note that working hours for Muslims are shorter during the Holy Month of Ramadan.
TIME AND ATTENDANCE
Each company has policies that relate to working hours, overtime, timekeeping, absences and vacations. These policies may vary from company to company but are always in compliance with the Saudi Labor Law.
