Nesma is committed to providing a safe work environment for the health, security and welfare of its employees, and to develop awareness and appreciation of safe work practices. Similarly, since safety is everyone’s responsibility, all employees should familiarize themselves with their safety responsibilities, strive to follow safety practices at all times, act proactively to prevent accidents and injuries, communicate hazards to line managers, and be prepared for emergencies that may occur in the workplace.
REPORTING SAFETY HAZARDS
Employees must report unsafe conditions or safety hazards to the company as soon as possible. There are three ways to report a health or safety hazard:
If an employee believes that there is an immediate danger to his/her health or safety or that of others, the employee should call emergency services (999), then proceed to notify his/her line manager and HR.
If there is no immediate danger to the health or safety of the employee or others, but it is believed that there is an ongoing or potential hazard that may need attention, the employee should contact his/her line manager.
If a line manager cannot remedy the problem, or a line manager is not available, HR should be contacted.
For example, the following actions should be taken to prevent slips, trips, and falls:
Keep floor surfaces safe by:
Wiping up spills immediately
Wearing appropriate footwear
Displaying cautionary notices during cleaning and polishing
Immediately reporting loose carpet and any damaged floor coverings to the appropriate supervisor
Preventing electrical leads from crossing walkways or workstations
Keep chairs in safe condition:
Chairs should be routinely inspected for condition and never used for climbing
REPORTING INJURIES
Any accident, no matter how slight, must be reported immediately. If an employee is injured on Nesma premises, an accident report must be filled out for the injured person, within twenty-four (24) hours of the time of the accident.
FIRE PROTECTION
In the event of a fire and/or fire alarm being sounded, the following guidelines must be observed: • All persons in the building are expected to immediately evacuate the facilities as quickly as possible
Never use the elevator during the evacuation
Exit the building utilizing the most direct route and closest stairwell available
If you can smell smoke or see a fire in the building, activate the fire alarm system and exit the building closing doors along the exit path, when possible, in order to contain the spread of flames and smoke
At no time should the closing of doors or the activation of the alarm delay exiting the building
Never ignore a fire alarm or remain in the building longer than is necessary to exit
Never re-enter the building to retrieve any items or personal belongings
Re-enter only when emergency responders advise that the emergency is cleared
In order to help prevent fire, the following guidelines should be followed:
Burning of candles is prohibited indoors
Smoking is prohibited inside all buildings
Never overload circuits — multi-way extension leads should only be used after consulting electrical staff
PERSONAL PROPERTY AND VISITORS
The company does not assume responsibility for personal property brought by employees to company premises. Employees are encouraged to take adequate precautions and exercise their best judgment before bringing personal property to company premises. Employees should keep their personal items secured and locked if necessary.
For similar reasons related to personal and company safety, company visitors are required to enter through the main entrance of the building and register with the receptionist. No visitors are permitted beyond the reception and waiting area without being accompanied by a company employee.
